LEEK FLOWER CLUB

-

2018 is passing us by very quickly and September saw our AGM. Sue Davis, our retiring chairman, passed over the reins to Lorraine Simcox.

All committee members stood down but were re-elected by our club members. We are also very proud to welcome our youngest member yet to committee – Victoria Sheldon – aged 14.

Victoria attends with her mum, Suzanne, who is press and programme secretary. Victoria is a keen flower arranger and doesn’t mind helping us at meetings behind the scenes to help us prepare for our demonstrators.

After the official business we were delighted to welcome Lisa Dean and Anthony Beardmore from Beresford Barns, Brown Edge. Lisa and Anthony work very hard at the nursery, which covers 13 acres. You may know Lisa as she stands on Leek trestle market with her lovely produce.

Lisa talked about the power of plants. She told us how they helped her at a time when she was suffering from mental stress and anxiety. Lisa had brought along a selection of plants and talked about many of their healing properties.

For example, jasmine can help you get a better nights sleep. Lavender helps lower stress and anxiety levels and lowers your heart rate. Rosemary improves air quality and is also used by dementia sufferers.

Aloe vera, as well as having excellent healing qualities, is a powerful air purifier. Chrysanthemums lessen the symptoms of worry and stress and ivy, within the space of 12 hours, will remove 94 per cent of toxins and mould spores from the air.

It is Lisa’s intention to develop Beresford Barns as a therapy unit for sufferers of mental stress and anxiety. It should be up and running sometime in 2019. If you would like to know more please visit Lisa on her stall in Leek trestle market.

Our demonstrator on October 11 is Beverley Short from Stratford-upon-avon with ‘My Bargain Hunt’. We will meet at St Edward’s Cofe Academy, Westwood Road, Leek at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome – admission £6.

The practise class is ‘Making a Statement’ – a contemporary urn for a wedding or party. The practise class is FREE to any of our members who want to learn or advance their skills in flower arranging.
