‘Walking is a very sociable activity’
Ramblers are looking for new members
AN INVITATION has been issued for people to join a Leek walking group.
Leek Ramblers, who have 90 members, are looking to increase their membership and for people to enjoy the fresh air outdoors.
Membership secretary, Geoff Preston, said: “Walking is a very sociable activity and enables you to explore places you might not go to on your own. If you have a favourite walk you are most welcome to lead it. We are a friendly, diverse group always welcoming to new members; you may join us for three walks before joining.
“Our programme of walks is published on our website – www. leekramblers.org.uk. We meet in Leek every Sunday at 9.30am and always have a walk of about six miles with a longer walk twice a month of about 10 miles. In the summer we have short evening walks usually starting and ending at a pub.
“We explore all areas of the Peak District and have a variety of easy and moderately difficult walks. As a member you can join other local groups in Cheshire, Derbyshire and further afield.”
Due to the coronavirus the group has had to stop its activities, but Mr Preston said that it was hoped that walks should be able to start again shortly.
The group is now preparing a leaflet promoting membership of the ramblers, which will appear on facebook. Membership is £36.50 for an individual and £49 for a joint two adults.
Mr Preston said: “We organise a programme of walks to suit members of all abilities. We also campaign to maintain and improve the footpath network.
“In Staffordshire there are 2500 miles of footpaths and rights of way, available to all, free of charge. The county council is responsible, as the highways authority, to keep the surface of all paths in good condition, signpost the network and resolve any conflicts.
“They also maintain and update the Definitive Map which determines all rights of way. District and parish councils also signpost and waymark footpaths, maintain stiles, gates and bridges and produce leaflets and web sites to help walkers enjoy and benefit from the network.
“Teams of volunteers give many hours of their time to maintain the network. Other volunteer groups, including Ramblers and the Footpath Society, maintain and signpost the network.
“Landowners have responsibilities to keep footpaths safe and in good condition. There is generally an excellent relationship between walkers and most landowners. Occasionally there can be issues but walkers respect the need to obey the Country Code and for example, close gates and ensure livestock are not disturbed.”
According to a recent Yougov poll, 74 per cent of Britons took up exercise during the lockdown – with walking the most popular activity.
