Village gets the net as website and historical archive goes live

-

A STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands village has now got its own website.

Elkstones near Warslow’s website now contains information about forthcoming village events, the church, history, the two Elkstone’s books, newsletters, neighbours past and present with useful links to services and local businesses.

Another interesting feature is the link to the village archive, a central store for village historical records, photographs and documentation. This offers the opportunity to look at a slide show of photographs, documents, newspaper articles and to search for matters of historic interest to people, events and buildings.

A spokeswoman said:

“The majority of material has been collected over the last four decades by Margaret and Peter Grant who founded the village society, the Elkstonians, and whose meticulous storage and labelling of accounts, receipts, reports and pictures has amounted to a vast and fascinating illustration of life in the small unspoilt Peak District village. Many other neighbours and people from further afield have added to the collection.

“A successful bid for funding to the South West Peak Partnership and Heritage Lottery Fund, along with generous donations from well-wishers, kick started the project. In addition, we have worked hard to supplement the grant with fundraising activities and hundreds of hours of volunteer time as well as some professional help, much of which came from within the village.

“This combination enables us to continue the project into the future and hopefully engage the interest of many local people and historians.”
