Still roaring after all these years
We take a look back at nearly 30 years of THE LIONS CLUB OF LEEK and the many events they have held...
EARLIER this year, we reported on the Lions Club of Leek celebrating their 28th birthday. The club, sponsored by Cheadle Lions Club was chartered on April 24, 1992. The Club’s Inaugural Charter Presentation was held at The Fox Hotel, Rushton on Friday, July 17, 1992.
Lion President Bill Holland and Cheadle Lions Club members helped with the preparations and were on hand to welcome the guests Councillor Ken Hulme, Mayor of Leek, District Governor Derek Roberts, Past District Governor Lion John Barratt, and representatives from many Lions clubs throughout the district who joined for a memorable and enjoyable celebration.
District Governor Lion Derek Roberts presented the Charter and responded to the Toast to Lions Clubs International proposed by Lion President, Carole Robinson.
The planned birthday celebration Sunday lunch at The Hotel Rudyard had to be cancelled due to coronavirus.
A spokeswoman for the Lions Club of Leek, said: “Over the years we have fundraised and served our community. Our fundraising efforts over the years have been varied and include Ye Lions Inn Bowling Alley at Leek Show; Leek By the Sea on Silk Street car park; carnival floats; mock weddings; Christmas parties in April; three evenings of song with the Dalesmen Male Voice Choir and Cor Meibion Onllwyn from Abercrave South Wales; Santa duties along with Easter and Christmas raffles.
“Thanks to the continued support received the club has been able to donate thousands of pounds to local worthy causes and provide Message in a Bottle; Message in a Wallet and In Case of Emergency labels free of charge.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support over the past 28 years and look forward to being active again in our community once the lockdown ends.”
