Former mechanic writes a book on his ‘love of lorries’

Author has given talks across the country

A STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands man who grew up with a love of lorries has published his first book.

Carl Johnson, right, has had a lifelong interest in lorries, and rode in his late father’s vehicle which he drove for Dennis Scragg of Brookhouses in Cheadle.

This interest led Carl to train as a mechanic, working and repairing lorries, and further work as a driver.

He has restored from scrap a 1963 ERF lorry and has been involved with many clubs and societies, even organising vehicle rallies.

Carl has also given slide shows and talks all over the country since taking early retirement two years ago.

Now he has seen a lifetime ambition come true by writing on his favourite subject.

The book, entitled ‘Scrapped and Disused Lorries’, is the first of six that Carl has been contracted to write, and the others are now well underway.

The 95-page book contains 180 pictures.

Formerly of Cheadle, Carl left the town a few years ago and moved to Spain, where he still has a property. He now resides in Leek.

Carl said: “I have always had an interest and love of lorries.

“I was the first apprentice at Shirley’s Transport in Cellarhead to go to college and study for my City and Guilds certificate.”

The book retails at £14.99 and is available directly from the publisher’s website: Amberley Publishing: sales@amberley-books.com

Alternatively, Carl has a few spare copies, and these can be bought by sending an email to kay1carl2@ gmail.com
