Bakewell market

MONDAY, DECEMBER 21

-

THE last market of the year was rather busier than expected with 313 cattle and 1,588 sheep on sale.

There had been concerns that the travel ban from Dover might affect the lamb trade, but the fears were unfounded and prices were much as last week.

For the avoidance of doubt, the next market at Bakewell is on Monday, January 4.

We will be preparing a Store Cattle Entry List, but we will be finalising the catalogue on Wednesday, December 30.

Please telephone or text your entries to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441.

There were 143 Store & Breeding Cattle and whilst the long-distance buyers were not in attendance personally trade was outstanding and there was plenty of demand for the cattle on offer.

Steers sold to £1,160 with heifers to £990 and feeding bulls to £800.

The 13 breeding cattle attracted plenty of interest with in-calvers to £1,190 and several topping the £1,000 mark.

A decent turnout of 74 finished cattle sold well with most of the regular buyers present, top figures 259p and £1,597.

The average for the 51 heifers looking distinctly festive at 211.7p

65 OTM and feeding cattle forward with trade well up to snuff. Top figures 178p and £1,358 with the average a healthy 123.2p

31 Calves with bulls to £295 and heifers £258.

A good entry of sheep with vendors rewarded with a decent trade. The best lambs to 250p and £112.50 with the SQQ average a solid 217.3p.

Cull Sheep were well represented with a total of 377 on offer. Ewes sold to £179 to ave £96.78
