THE final sale for 2020 brought a heavy snow covering along with it, but a great turnout for the ‘in-between’ Tuesday sale.

Lambs were a particular highlight, with an excellent entry for the Christmas week, saw lambs up to 261p/kg and to average 232.8p/kg or £100/head overall! Cull ewes also a fast trade and much firmer on the week, up to £155/head.

Dairies were an excellent trade once again with the entry topping at £2320 for heifers and five over £2000.

Similar numbers in the pig section with fat pigs selling up to £134p/kg.

Small entries in the barren cattle and calf sections today.

BARREN COWS (7);

A small entry topped at 119p/kg for a 1055kg Hereford bull from Mark Hall, Knypersley.

Cows topped at 113p/kg for a 610kg Charolais from D & DM Turner, Rainow with Black & white’s to 97p/kg from John Plant, Bradnop.

The snow did not stop vendors or purchasers on Tuesday with another bouncy trade which saw the best to £2320 and 5 over £2000.

Regular vendor Richard Thompson of Sudbury topped at £2320 with his Wiltor Cruise heifer with Malcolm Trevor-jones close behind with another heifer at £2260. He also had a second calver to £2040. A third calver from Richard Sidebottom reached £1980.

A pretty heifer from John Allan of Tutbury made £2120.

More numbers are needed to satisfy demand so please get in touch if you have stock to sell

Plenty of pigs forward and trade remains firm.

Pork pigs sold to 110p/kg for a trio of

72kg pigs from J & B Fentem, Alsop en le Dale.

Cutting pigs topped at 116p/kg three times for 75kg, 82kg and 83kg pigs from J & B Fentem who sold a run of other cutters at 110p/kg, 105p/kg and 102p/kg.

Bacon pigs topped at 128p/kg for a 97.5kg pig from MC & EA Beattie, Allostock with 126p/kg for 102p/kg pigs from Bernard Minshull and also for 97kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch. A 97kg pig

realised 124p/kg for J & B Fentem, with 122p/kg for 96kg pigs from B Minshull and 118p/kg for 93kg pigs from MC & EA Beattie.

More heavier pigs about this Tuesday topping at 134p/kg for a pair of 105kg pigs from the Parsons who also sold 105kg pigs at 126p/kg. J G Belfield of Sheen sold 116kg pigs at 120p/kg and 118p/kg for 114kg pigs.

BUTCHERS LAMBS (656);

A good entry for the Christmas week given the increment weather met an excellent trade from start to finish. Best lambs in very good demand with plenty at 240p and above topping at 261p/kg.

Best big lambs selling at 260p/kg or £126.10/head and plenty at £115 and above.

Good numbers required each week to keep orders fulfilled. Thank you for your continued support and best wishes for 2021.

CULL SHEEP (149);

A modest entry sold on a fast trade for all on offer. Best Texel’s to £155/head with other best sorts at £130 +.

Mules a stronger trade, perhaps £5 firmer on the week, being regularly £75 - £80/ head.

Overall average of £84.48.

CALVES (28);

Selling time – 10:00am

Auctioneer – Oliver Hiles (07801 530899); Trade continues to be strong with almost as many buyers as calves.

Blue bulls sold to £350 for a Blue from Peter Gilman, Thorncliff­e with plenty of buyers for all sizes.

Best of the heifers were Limousins today with a stronger 2 ½ month old at £295 from F E Whittaker & Sons with younger sorts at £270 from Andrew Hulme.

Next Week - Back to normal with good entries expected.
