WORK STARTS ON 12O HOMES
Work starts on new ‘Cecilly Mills’ estate as 1,000 houses are planned
A STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands town is set to grow as work starts on building hundreds of new homes.
As part of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council’s Local Plan, Cheadle will see around 1,000 new homes built up until 2033.
Construction work has now started on a new housing development which will deliver 120 new homes at a former JCB factory.
Bellway is building a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses at Cecilly Mills, off Oakamoor Road, with 13 homes to be allocated as affordable housing for local people through rent or shared ownership.
Marie Richards, sales director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “Cheadle is a sought-after area for homebuyers, so we are pleased to be moving forward with construction work at Cecilly Mills.
“We’re aware of the growing demand for new homes in Staffordshire, as we’re already building and selling new homes at Bramshall Green in nearby Uttoxeter, and we are anticipating high levels of interest in the properties at Cecilly Mills when they are released for sale.
“We will be launching Cecilly Mills next summer and we are expecting the first residents to move into their new homes at the development in January 2022.”
Cecilly Mills is located less than a mile from Cheadle town centre and Bellway has incorporated the market town’s industrial heritage into the scheme.
Marie said: “The development sits on the former site of the Cecilly
Mills JCB factory that was closed in 2016, with the old buildings being demolished in 2017.
“We decided to name the development Cecilly Mills in recognition of the site’s history, first as a textile mill and then as the JCB factory, as it played a big part in Cheadle’s development and helped the town to grow into a thriving and desirable place to live.”
Prices at Cecilly Mills are yet to be confirmed but buyers can register for updates ahead of the launch next year.

The start of the development comes just weeks after planners at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council issued a final decision approval notice which will see an additional 260 new homes along with a new primary school also being built in Cheadle at a different location.
The development will take place on land east of Froghall Road and north of Ayr Road, and Cheltenham Avenue.
The original application was approved by the council’s planning committee in November 2019, despite major concerns it will ‘clog up’ the town and put more pressure on doctors and dentists.
The first phase involved full planning permission for 125 dwellings and access to a proposed primary school. The second phase involves outline approval for a further 135 new homes and primary school.
In a third development in the town 60 houses are presently being constructed off Thorley Drive.
However, district and town councillors warned that the town had not got the facilities to cope with hundreds more houses.
In a letter this week to the Post
(see page 13), Mr Alcock said: “Don’t they realise they are ruining Cheadle, building all these
houses. We have not got the facilities to cope.
“We had more facilities 50 years ago when the town was a lot smaller with everything the town needed. They cannot alter the road system which was mostly built for horse and carts. Is this proper planning?”
