Dabbers make a move to recruit all-rounder Kapil

NANTWICH have completed the signing of former Worcestershire and Surrey all-rounder Aneesh Kapil.

The 27-year-old right-handed batsman and medium-pacer makes the move to Whitehouse Lane for this summer’s Cheshire County League Premier Division campaign.

Born in Wolverhampton, Kapil started out in Staffordshire’s junior system before linking up with Worcestershire.

He made his first-class debut for Worcestershire in 2011, but was released by the county in 2013 and went on to have a two-season stint with Surrey.

Kapil, who also played 22 times for England Under-19s, left the Oval at the end of the 2015 season and subsequently returned to represent Staffordshire.

He was part of the Staffs side which reached the semi-finals of the Knockout Trophy in 2017 where they lost to Berkshire at Longton.

There has still been the desire to break back in to the first-class arena - and Kapil spent time with Sussex before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

His final appearance on the professional stage came in July 2019 when he was part of the Sussex side which lost by 10 wickets in a tour match against Australia A at Arundel.

The Aussies included a side packed with Test players - the likes of Josh Hazelwood, James Pattinson and current skipper Tim Paine - and Kapil made an unbeaten 33 in Sussex’s second innings.

In total, Kapil has made 15 firstclass appearances, played 20 List A games and figured in 14 Twenty20 encounters. He compiled one firstclass century - 104 for Surrey against New Zealand A at the Oval in 2014.

Kapil also has extensive club experience, having featured in the Birmingham League, Leicestershire League and Surrey Championship.

Kapil tweeted: “Delighted to have signed for @Nantwichcc. One of my most memorable cricket matches as a 12 year old was played at Nantwich. Really looking forward to making it my home ground for the summer!”

The Dabbers have enjoyed success in recent years in various formats, and won the league in 2018.

They have also proved to be an accomplished cup side, with excellent runs on the national stage in the 40over and T20 formats.

Skipper Ray Doyle also led Nantwich

to the Cheshire Cup title this summer for the first time in their history.

Nantwich tweeted: “Nantwich CC are delighted to announce the signing of talented all rounder @aneeshkapil47 . Welcome to the club Aneesh can’t wait for the season to start.”

Nantwich had already dipped in to

the market to recruit wicketkeeperbatsman Spencer Byatt from Little Stoke.

The Staffordshire gloveman, who helped the county win the Unicorns Championship Eastern Division in 2019, fills the void left by Ryan Brown, who has departed the club.
