A BITTERLY cold day at Leek this Tuesday. Trade for hogget’s hit another level today, with SQQ average of 281p/kg and £118/ head and strong demand for all qualities! Top price of 340p/kg and £146.96. Ewes are also a decent trade, selling up to £140.

Dairies met a buoyant trade, with a nice entry of milkers forward, selling up to £2090 for cows and heifers to £2070. Don’t forget, next week is the monthly Pedigree sale so keep an eye on our website for further details.

A small show of barren cattle sold on a solid trade up to 142p/ kg for black & whites along with a small show of clean cattle but a real highlight being a 540kg Limousin heifer making 243p/kg for Mark Butler.

Pigs were a better trade this Tuesday with heavy pigs topping the day at 138p/kg and bacon pigs up to 136p/kg with numerous pens over 120p/kg.

Calves continue to sell very well, and more forward this week, topping at £410 for Blue bulls and heifers to £312.

BARREN COWS (19);

Lack of numbers, mainly down to the cold weather spell, but a strong trade for those that showed stock, with Holsteins to 142p/kg for a 715kg cow from S & J Ryder, Dilhorne with other black & white’s at 134p/ kg for a 830kg Holstein from RG & AS Williamson, and 132p/kg for a 745kg Holstein from J & C Hudson, Hollinsclo­ugh.

Overall average of 111.74p/kg or £742.48 per head.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A small entry of clean cattle but an exceptiona­l Limousin heifer at 540kg sold for 243p/kg

from Mark Butler, Bagnall.

Bulls sold up to 204p/kg for a 605kg Limousin bull from Chris Barnsley, Morridge. Black & white bulls sold at 162p/kg for a 605kg Friesian and 155p/kg for a 585kg Friesian from J E Archer, Hilton.

A 665kg Hereford steer realised 185p/kg for J E Watkins, Horton and a 525kg Angus heifer made 173p/kg for D J Wheeldon, Rudyard.

Top headage price of £1312.20 for Mark Butlers heifer with bulls to £1234.20 and steers to £1230.25.

DAIRIES (57);

A superb entry of 52 milkers forward on Tuesday along with 5 calves met a solid trade for both heifers and cows with 3 passing the £2000 mark.

Topping the day at £2090 was a superb cow from the Clark family of Bradnop for a third calver giving 50kg. Their entry of 8 saw 3 other third and fourth calvers in excess of £1700 to average £1646 for the group which were all in their 3rd-5th lactations.

Heifers topped at £2070 for a 27kg heifer from Richard Lomas of Calow with another from the same home at £2010.

British Friesian heifers reached £1780 with British Friesian cows making £1710 from John and Leslie Kirby of Oakham.

A lovely run of 4 Dairy

Shorthorn heifers from Gary Norbury topped at £270.

We have a great entry of 70 already entered for next weeks pedigree sale with a further

PIGS (114);

A good entry of fat pigs this Tuesday and trade much improved on last week with

averages up on the week.

Pork pigs sold up to 126p/kg for 68kg pigs from K C Dipple, Studley, who also sold other pork pigs at 123p/kg, 112p/kg and 110p/kg.

Cutting pigs topped at 124p/kg for 84kg pigs from J & B Fentem, Alsop, who sold 84.6kg pigs at 120p/kg and 76kg pigs at 113p/ kg.

Plenty of Bacon pigs forward selling up to 136p/kg for 97kg pigs from J G Belfield, Sheen who also sold 91kg pigs at 136p/ kg. 98kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons sold at 135p/kg and J & B Fentem sold bacon pigs at 134p/kg, 130p/kg and 128p/kg.

Heavy pigs topped the day at 138p/kg for a 106kg pig from

R T Wilson, Oldham, who also sold 111kg pigs at 136p/kg with 119kg pigs at 133p/kg for J G Belfield who also sold 111kg pigs at 133p/kg and 126p/kg with 108kg pigs at 124p/kg for Bernard Minshull.

BUTCHERS HOGGET’S (676);

A seasonal entry saw an exceptiona­l trade from start to finish!

Best sorts regularly over 300p/ kg and an abundance of lambs topping £130/head. Top prices of 340p/kg or £146.96. Many many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage! Overall average of 281p/kg or £118 per head, including a number of light weight and store types.

CULL SHEEP (125);

A small entry saw a solid trade topping at £140/head for best Texel’s. £128 for Charolais and £110 for best Suffolk ewes. Strong Mules generally £80 and most mules trading £65 - £75 head.

Overall average of £74.80.

CALVES (118);

Better numbers again and a solid trade, very similar to last week although less buyers around the ring, possibly due to the wintery conditions.
