A STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands author has just completed his 75th book.
Lindsey Porter’s book, South West Peak District, Reflections of a Bygone Era, covers many Staffordshire Moorlands villages and towns.
The 160-page book contains plenty of new material, including the oldest known grave of a Royal
Marine, celebrated annually in Longnor by a detachment of today’s marines; the discovery of underground lakes in the Manifold Valley; and Saxon coins and jewellery in the valley in 1924.
Lindsey said: “Were men smelting silver in the Churnet Valley?
“Did you know that a Prime Minister of British Columbia was born in Hartington and that the second oldest railway in the world was in our area?
“Look around you at the multitude of colours printed on your clothes, carpets and curtains. The discovery of how to do this from plant based ingredients happened in Leek.
With many illustration, this book is a welcome addition to our knowledge of what our forefathers and mothers did and what they experienced.”
The book features many Moorlands churches which are of National importance, along with railways and interesting pub names. It also features commercial traffic on the Caldon Canal at Froghall Wharf and the virus and plague which hit Leek in 1699.
Life in the Moorlands also looks at Alton Towers gardens, Ilam Hall and Axe Edge and the upper valley Moorlands, along with water and other mills in the area.
Lindsey does not just write stories. He is also a guide book writer, with eight mini guides to Scottish islands and another three on the Lake District including ‘In the Lakeland Footsteps of Beatrix Potter’ and another on William Wordsworth. Keeping up with the time, he will publish this Spring his first E-book, on Snowdonia.
