Porthill and Woore link up to provide opportunities

-

WOMEN and girls will have more opportunities to play cricket this summer thanks to a partnership between Porthill Park and Woore.

The two North Staffs and South Cheshire League clubs are pooling their resources to ensure that more women and girls have the chance to take to the field.

A pathway has been devised between the two clubs, from softball cricket to women’s senior cricket - with the ‘hub’ being a standalone operation which will not impact on ‘home club’ commitments.

In recent years, Porthill Park - along with Meakins - have channelled plenty of effort and energy in to developing the women’s game.

Porthill Park women’s first team play in Cheshire League Division One, where they are the reigning champions.

England Academy star Eve Jones will remain as their skipper this summer, around her Central Sparks and Birmingham commitments, while a new second team is also being introduced.

They will also play in the Cheshire set-up, starting off in Division Two.

In addition, under-13 and under-15 teams have been entered in to the ECB T20 Lady Taverners events, which will help to further raise the profile of girls’ cricket in Staffordshire.

The partnership with Woore will also enable alternative formats of girls cricket at junior age-group levels. This includes both hardball and softball.

Plans are in place to launch a women’s softball squad with an emphasis on fun and enjoyment.
