A SOGGY Tuesday did not deter trade, with plenty of buyers for all stock at Leek.

A strong trade for barren cattle this week, with the averages creeping up week on week, topping at 156p/kg twice, with clean cattle selling up to 244p/kg for a smart Limousin heifer.

A small entry of Dairies sold on a very good trade for the quality forward with the best heifers selling up to £1950, with in-calf heifers to £1800.

Lambs continue to sell at a pace, with best quality always keenly bid for topping at 396p/kg or £180.42. Hoggs still coming forward and a strong demand for the best topping at 299p/kg and £173.88. More cull sheep about this week, and plenty of trade selling up to £149.

More fat pigs forward and selling on a strong trade, with a couple of returning buyers for fat pigs. Some super quality sorts selling to 178p/kg and 158p/kg, with sows to 82p/kg.

Calves just keep on giving with 5 bull calves over £410 to top at £435 and heifer calves to £320.

BARREN COWS (29);

Another superb trade for barrens with less about but some quality types about. Top price of 156p/kg twice for a 755kg Limousin from D & A Stonier, Eaton and for a 775kg Holstein from CJC Stone, Onecote.

Other black & white’s sold up to 152p/kg for a 725kg Friesian from James Warrington, Cocknage and also for a 785kg Friesian from F J Gould & Son, Longnor.

Top headage price of £1333.55 for the 895kg Simmental from JH & RH Ede, Fole with Holsteins to £1209 from John Stone, and others at £1193.20, £1102

and £1095 with Limousins at £1177.80.

A 88 month old Limousin stock bull from EJ & DC Kidd, Flash realised 120p/kg, weighing 1080 kg to gross £1296.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A small entry sold on a solid trade peaking at 244p/kg for a very smart 525kg Limousin heifer from Chris Barnsley, Morridge with a 555kg Limousin heifer at 216p/kg for F Swindells, Bosley who also sold a 715kg Limousin steer for 189p/kg.

A run of black & white bulls from J E Archer topped at 175p/ kg for a 585kg Angus and a 595kg Friesian at 173p/kg and a 565kg Friesian at 170p/kg.

Top headage prices of

£1351.35 for the Limousin steer with heifers to £1281 and £1198.80 with bulls to £1029.35 and £1023.75.

DAIRIES (37);

All things considered a good trade for the quality forward with a top of £1950 for a heifer from Messrs Bennett of Whiston. Close behind at £1860 was a 24kg heifer from Ron Tomkinson.

In-calf heifers topped at £1800 from R Lomas of Calow with bullers from Messrs Cartledge of Buxton to £1100.

PIGS (122);

An excellent trade received today with more buyers after fat pigs bumping up the prices.

Pork pigs sold up to 141p/kg for 62kg and 69kg pigs from Alan Worth, Marton, who also sold a 70kg pig at 126p/kg.

Cutting pigs sold to 148p/kg for a 82kg pig from D J Pope,

Thame, with a trio of 80kg pigs at 126p/kg from J & B Fentem and 118p/kg for a 83kg pig from Alan Worth.

Bacon pigs in very good demand reaching a remarkable 178p/kg for a super trio of 96kg pigs from David Goldstraw, who also sold a trio of 99kg pigs at 158p/kg. Others sold at 148p/ kg for 87kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons who sold other pens at 145p/kg twice, and the Fentems sold bacon pigs at 146p/kg, 140p/kg twice and 102kg pigs at 144p/kg for J G Belfield, Sheen.

Heavy pigs sold up to 150p/ kg for a 108kg pig from J & B Fentem, with a 108kg pig at 134p/kg from S Bailey, Biddulph who also sold a pair of 109kg pigs at 130p/kg. an 118kg pig at 111p/kg for D J Pope, Thame.

Culls sows not as well sought after but the best to 82p/kg for a 280kg sow from Ray Rowlinson, Oakamoor and a 273kg sow at 55p/kg for D J Pope, Thame.

SPRING LAMBS (153);

A strong trade for lambs with all qualities in demand, and plenty of buyers, selling up to 396p/kg for handy weight sorts, and top headage price of £180.42

Overall average of 347.62p/kg or SQQ 345.16p/kg.

BUTCHERS HOGGET’S (149);

A seasonal entry with the best quality a strong price as numbers start to dry up. Top price of 299p/ kg and £173.88 per head.

The overall average of 221.92p/ kg reflects the mixed quality of hoggs forward.

CULL SHEEP (169);

Good to see more about and a solid trade, with plenty of continenta­l types £115 + topping at £149 with others at £136, £126, £124 etc.

Strong Mules generally £90 with leaner ewes £50 - £65.
