Leek Tennis Club serving up some fantastic team displays
IT HAS been another good week for the Leek Tennis Club teams, with some close matches played as well as some fantastic wins.
The Ladies County Team had a comfortable away win against Draycott Ladies. The first pairing, Caroline Green and Janet Hardern, had a slow start against Draycott second pair taking the first set 6-4. They got into their stride in the second game winning 6-0. Their second match was a more straightforward affair winning both sets 6-1 and 6-0.
Alison Randle and Anne Gould, Leek’s second pair, played some long rallies and excellent tennis just losing both sets 6-3 and 6-3. They turned it around for their last match winning both sets 6-1 and 7-6, giving the team a 3-1 win.
It was a strange week for Leek Men’s Teams, with the fixtures resulting in four matches against Florence. Leek’s A Team drew two closely contested games 2-2, in both the City and Suburban and Staffs County League. Each pair won one rubber in each match, with the first pairing being Alex Cimino and Rich Smith, and the second pairing being Drew Bennett and Toby Gayes.
The Men’s B team drew 2-2 against Stone B on Wednesday night, with the team consisting of a first pairing of Dave Williamson and Sam Bostock, and the second pairing of Josh Gilman and Luke Thompson. The B team followed this up with a 3-1 victory against Florence C on Friday night.
Leek Men’s A and B teams currently occupy the top two positions in the Division 1 North of the Staffs County League.
The Men’s C team won a very close match against Florence D team, with the first pairing, Dave Bennett and Rob Cimino, winning a marathon first match on a championship third set tiebreak, 6-7, 7-6 and 10-7, and the second match 7-6 and 6-1. Tom Beardmore and Darren Abberley lost their first match 6-3 and 6-2, but won comfortably in their second match, 6-1 and 6-2.
