Loan ranger Alex joins Derbyshire in second switch

-

STAFFORDSHIRE all-rounder Alex Thomson is heading out on loan for the second time this season.

The off-spinner and right-handed batsman has made the move from Warwickshire to Derbyshire for the remainder of the campaign.

The 27-year-old, who plays his club cricket for Leek in the North Staffs and South Cheshire League, had been at Durham on a temporary basis.

He headed to the north east for the first seven County Championship matches of the summer, but didn’t feature at all as Durham largely went with an all-out pace attack.

He returned briefly to Edgbaston, but has now packed his bags to link up with Derbyshire for the summer.

Derbyshire’s head of cricket Dave Houghton said: “Alex will add good depth. We’ve been keen to add another spin option, so to sign someone who can also extend our batting line-up is very pleasing.

“He’s hungry to impress. He’s at an age where he wants to be playing firstteam games every week, and he will have the opportunity to compete for a place here across the formats.

“With the hectic schedule coming up, it’s so important to have options, and bringing

Alex in will really enhance our squad.” is not eligible to play in their four-day encounter against his parent county, which starts today.

Derbyshire have yet to win a game this season, losing three and drawing four.

That has left them bottom of Group One, although they will be hoping for better when they turn their attention to the limited overs formats.

Thomson has made 14 first-class, nine List A and 11 Twenty20 appearances for Warwickshire and the Birmingham Bears since making the move to Edgbaston in 2017.

He has claimed 43 wickets across all formats, and has also weighed in with two half-centuries in List A cricket.

He was spotted by Warwickshire after some impressive performances for both Staffordshire on the minor counties circuit and with Cardiff MCCU.

Thomson featured in all five Bob Willis Trophy matches for Warwickshire last summer, which saw the schedule badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

He has played in 13 Championship games for Staffs, as well as seven Knockout Trophy ties.

Thomson was part of the Staffordshire side which won the Minor Counties Championship title in 2014 with victory over Wiltshire in the final.

On the way to winning the Eastern Division, he played a key role, including an excellent 120 against Bucks at Burnham.
