STAFF from a Leek-based building society are to walk 50 miles across four counties to raise funds for a hospital this weekend.

Leek United Building Society staff will be taking on a sponsored walk across the organisation’s heartland counties of Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and Derbyshire to raise badly-needed funds for University Hospitals of North Midlands (UNHM).

Branch manager Dan Nutt has come up with the idea forthe ambitious fundraiser. He will be joined by staff and their families as he takes in the Society’s branches in the towns of Market Drayton, Congleton, Leek and Ashbourne along the 50-mile route on July 17 and 18.

Father of two, Dan, 31, from Cheadle, said: “In Leek United, we’ve been terrific at supporting various important local causes during the pandemic – and together we’ve said we want to continue, that we want giving back to the local community, to represent a key part of what we’re all about in our society going forward.

“I’m therefore delighted to lead this fundraising effort and I would love if the readers of the Post & Times would consider sponsoring me and our team by accessing the Virgin Money link at www.leekunited.co.uk.

“University Hospitals of North Midlands is a really deserving charity – think about how difficult it would have been for UHNM patients to video call their loved ones over recent times without the ipads that were provided to them and you’ll appreciate the importance of fundraising to this great charity.

“I’m hoping we can raise £5,000 with the support of our staff and the local community.”

Details of the walk and the route can also be found on the Society’s website and updates will be posted via social media.

Steve Rushton from University Hospital of North Midlands Charity said: “We’re delighted that Leek United Building Society have chosen us. The money raised will make a huge difference to patients and staff.”
