Music and movement in Moorlands

- By Les Jackson leslie.jackson@reachplc.com

NEW dance classes for children are available at several Staffordshire Moorlands towns and villages.

Boogie Mites provides interactive music and movement sessions for children aged six weeks to five years, accompanied by an adult.

The classes are being run by Paula Ariel, who said: “I am excited to be bringing these brilliant, brain stimulating programmes to the area for the first time.

“I have always aimed to teach in a fun and enjoyable way, and with these courses both child and adult have fun together!

“The use of original and catchy music and songs, home-made instruments, such as shakers, rhythm sticks and drums, as well as visual props, help children to develop in all seven key areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage. Creative music and movement sessions provide valuable brain boosting benefits.”

The decision to start the classes came from Paula’s years of experience employed by the Early Years Specialist Teaching Service, working with children up to the age of five, their families, and settings, where she gave advice on how to help the children advance in all areas of development.

During this time, she attended many courses on child development, with one of these being run by Boogie Mites, explaining how their classes can help with babies and children’s brain development.

As well as delivering a school-ready course, Paula is presently running three classes. Boogie Mites Babies for ages six weeks to pre-crawling, Boogie Mites Teenies for ages crawling to 18 months, and Boogie Mites Minis for ages 18 months to three years.

During the school holidays she will be delivering fun sessions These will be Pirate Adventure and Animal Explorers, both three-week courses, costing £20 for three, 45-minute sessions. Booking is essential, as the numbers attending will be limited by the present Covid rules. Cheadle and Leek will be limited to 12 adults, with smaller rooms accommodating even less.

Summer sessions will be held at Checkley Community Centre on a Monday afternoon, Guild Hall in Cheadle on a Tuesday morning, The Children’s Centre in Biddulph on a Wednesday morning, Cheddleton Community Centre on a Thursday morning, and The Conservative Club in Leek on a Friday morning.

Also, during the holidays, two Brain Boosting Baby courses will be running. Four sessions in Checkley on a Monday at 10.15am for £20, and six sessions in Leek on a Friday at 2.30pm for £30. As the groups have been proven to be of educational benefit, and also help with bonding, Staffordshire Moorlands Children’s Centre has agreed to cover the cost of children attending who live in the Staffordshire Moorlands area, who are either foster children or if their family receive Universal Credit. A free pass will be issued which will last for six months, and this can be applied for through Paula.

As Boogie Mites becomes more widely known in this region, Paula is hoping to employ and train new teachers.
