‘Progressive step’ in bid to build relationships at park

-

CHEADLE Town Council has taken steps to further strengthen community values for those using its Tean Road Recreation Ground over the summer holidays.

Councillors have agreed to trial a Community Reassurance Programme which is aimed at encouraging and supporting users of the recreation ground, pictured below right.

As well as providing social inclusion amongst the varied groups who use the park, there will also be a focus on supporting and inspiring community activity for all age groups and abilities.

The council will initially fund the trial for 15 hours per week over eight weeks, with a view to securing more long term funding should the programme be effective.

Town clerk Dave Mullington, said: “This is a positive and progressive step for the community, and councillors were naturally very supportive of this programme. It combines reassurance for those who use the park, and motivates community activity at the same time. We are looking to reduce anti-social behaviour, promote good standards and build relationships across the site.

“Nicky Derrette is an experienced youth worker who will encourage community values in the younger generation, and this will undoubtedly promote reassurance and inclusion.

“Annie Devereux has volunteered to work alongside Nicky for experience, and will provide a natural connection with young people. The programme will target the key times and areas of the park that have proven to be the most challenging, and we will measure its success as we go along.”
