ANOTHER busy Tuesday in the sheep shed and trade well in line with the national trends, with lambs up to 279p/kg or £141 and ewes to £168.

A short supply of Barren cattle met a strong trade, selling up to 176p/kg for Holsteins and clean cattle to 231p/kg.

Dairies sold on a good enquiry with heifers to £2100, £1960 and £1920. Don’t forget next week is the Pedigree Sale with some quality entries forward already.

Pigs generally a little less on the week, albeit a mixed entry but top prices of 122p/kg for cutting pigs and 121p/kg for bacon pigs.

An improved trade for calves and averages up, selling to £435 for a British Blue bull calf with heifers to £288.

A smaller entry but an exceptiona­l trade throughout and the average says it all at 137.7p/ kg!! top price of 176p/kg for a 635kg Holstein from Morson Bros, Hartington, with Shorthorns to 171p/kg for a 680kg cow from F Horsford, Croxden. A 415kg Dexter realised 170p/kg for G Clews, Biddulph.

Limousins sold to 167p/kg for a 540kg cow from G Stubbs, Wetton and a 660kg Angus made 166p/kg for S Davis, Roston.

Overall average of 137.7p/kg or £846.15 per head.

Top headage price of £1162.80 for Shorthorns, with Holsteins to £1144 and £1117.60; Blues to £1110.05 and Angus’ to £1095.60 and £1095.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A small entry topped at 231p/ kg for a 545kg Limousin heifer

from Mark Butler, Bagnall to gross £1258.95.

Two Red Poll bulls sold at 181p/ kg for a 575kg bull and 176p/kg for a 580kg bull, both from DA & LM Mos, Heaton.

A funny days trading maybe due to the sunny weather saw the best to £2100 from Messrs Beech of Sutton, Macclesfie­ld with others from the same home to £1960 and £1810 the second of which was a Shorthorn x.

Another Shorthorn x from Edward & Diane Bennett of Whiston reached £1800.

A Holstein heifer from Messrs Phillips of Winkhill reached £1920.

Next week is Pedigree week and we also have a superb entry of 10 fresh heifers from Messrs Johnson of Longnor.

More about this Tuesday selling on a steadier trade, and quality, prime weights more sought after.

Cutters sold up to 122p/kg for 83kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who sold other cutters at 120p/ kg twice and 108p/kg. A pair of 82kg pigs made 120p/kg for Chris Hine, Biddulph.

Bacon pigs sold up to 121p/kg for a pair of 95kg pig from J & B Fentem, with a pair of 97kg pigs at 119p/kg for PF & PD Parsons, and a trio of 99jg pigs realised 116p/kg for Bernard Minshull, who sold others at 111p/kg and 110p/kg twice.

Heavier pigs topped at 112p/ kg for 110kg pigs from PF 7 PD Parsons, who also sold a 111kg pig at 98p/kg. A 105kg pig from Bernard Minshull made 100p/kg.

Cull sows sold up to 74p/kg for a 268kg sow from D J Pope, Thame who sold other sows at 65p/kg, 64p/kg and 62p/kg. A

315kg sow realised 72p/kg for Steve Bailey and a 328kg sow made 65p/kg for R Rowlinson.

Two pens of weaners sold at £28 per head for I G Foster & Son, Burton.

BUTCHERS LAMBS (807);

A similar number forward with a solid trade. The best not quite as dear as we have been used to but still well bid for. Best lambs at 279p/kg and best sorts generally 265 - 275p/kg. big lambs very well bid for to 272p/kg or £141 per head.

More leaner types coming forward selling to a similar trade on the week generally 215p 235p/kg.

Overall average of 254p/kg or £103/head.

CULL SHEEP (426);

A bigger entry selling on a fast trade. Best Texel’s to £168 per head with heavy Texel’s at £140 +. Best Mules selling to £108 and best Suffolks to £128. Best Rams to £156.

Overall average of £104/head.

CALVES (137);

A good turnout of calves and more buyers at the ringside led to an improved trade throughout. 40 Continenta­l Bulls av £284.40 A super price for all with the best middle of the road and the third quality all finding bidders at ringside. A superb Blue bull (34 days) from the Handford family, Birch Vale topped the day at £435 who also had £375 for their other Blue. 9 best over £370; mediums £240 - £340 with a few smaller bulls about today.

25 Blues av £286 to £435 - J W Handford & Sons; 4 Sims av £320 to £355 - R Cooper & Son.
