Leek CSOB lift Shield after five star display!
LEEK CSOB are the new holders of the Leek Post Charity Shield as they overcame their closest rivals on one of the hottest days of the year on Sunday.
Ball Haye Green were defending the trophy they won in a tense penalty shoot out at Harrison Park in 2019 - there was no competition last year because of coronavirus.
But it was far more clear cut this time as two goals from Tom Lowe, and one each from Jake Priestman, Jacques Rushton and Jack Adams, gave the Old Boys a 5-3 victory at Pointon Park in Cheddleton.
After a close first half, Old Boys went in 2-0 up at half time after two goals in quick succession. But Green were back on level terms on the hour mark, having got back into the game early in the second half.
But almost immediately Old Boys were back in front again and added two more goals to ensure victory before Green scored for the third time late on.
The showpiece final took place at the end of a day of football which included junior tournaments and a game for veterans.
The competition is sponsored by the Leek Post &Times, Protech Electrical and Truck Fusion of Weston Coyney.
Proceeds from the Leek Post Charity Shield competition go to the Keiran Rutter legacy fund which supports charities and good causes in the area. The Leek Post Charity Shield is one of the oldest football competitions in North Staffordshire.
In 1908 the shield, formerly the Leek Post Challenge Shield, became the Leek Post Charity Shield and was competed for by teams in the Leek and Moorlands League and was the sister trophy to the Leek and District Cup.
In 1987, the shield was re-silvered by the Leek Post and Times and in 1988, its centenary year, was won for the last time by Oakamoor.
The trophy was never played for again and was handed over to the Staffordshire FA for safe keeping. But now the shield is back in the hands of a group of people who formed a new committee to revive the competition.
