Monty served up free chippy tea for families from Ukraine
Offer for those displaced by Russian invasion
KIND-HEARTED chippy owner Keith Montgomery offered a free meal to Ukrainian families displaced by the Russian invasion.
Keith, who runs Monty’s Fish and Chip Shop in Leek, welcomed anyone from Ukraine who has been given refuge in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
He was prompted to organise the event, which takes place on Friday evening, after a regular customer brought her Ukrainian relatives into his shop last weekend.
Keith, who has owned the Market Place chippy with his wife Jill for 18 years, said: “I told them that our Ukrainian friends didn’t have to pay and their meals were on us. They got very emotional and were really grateful.
“It made me think I could take it one stage further and get any Ukrainians that are staying in the Staffordshire Moorlands in one evening for free fish and chips, or whatever they want.
“I put it on Facebook and it’s had lots of shares and likes, which wasn’t my intention.
“You see the images of Ukraine on the TV and feel so helpless. This is something I can do to help out in a small way.”
Monty’s is a popular Leek eatery that has built up a loyal customer base over the years.
As well as a takeaway, it has a café which Keith is delighted is back to normal after it had to close during the pandemic.
He said: “It’s so good to have the café open again. I love to have people coming in, especially on Wednesday and Saturday when it’s really busy.”
The menu includes cod, plaice, haddock, scampi and fishcakes as well as a range of pies, puddings, chicken and burgers.
The café serves a lunchtime fish special – a small fish, chips, peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea or coffee, for £7.
Alternatively you can opt for the pie lunchtime special for £6 with any pie or pudding instead of the fish, which is also served with gravy. The café is also dog-friendly.
