LEEK Floral Art Society is to celebrate its diamond anniversary.

To mark the occasion the society would like to invite new members and visitors to the group.

A spokeswoman said: “If you have a love of flowers, like growing them or arranging them, then Leek Floral Art Society would be a good club to join and enhance your abilities. The club is a member of the Cheshire area of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Societies).

“As well as having a monthly meeting with different demonstrators, handson workshops and talks, you also have the opportunity to attend a practise class prior to the meeting, led by Lorraine Simcox. This class is free to members and covers all the different aspects of floral art.

“This year the club is celebrating their Diamond Anniversary and to mark the occasion we are planning a trip to Wollerton Old Hall Garden at Market Drayton – designed by Lesley and John Jenkins.

“It has developed into an important modern garden with echoes of arts and crafts and covers four acres, consisting of a series of linked garden ‘rooms’ featuring perennials, oak, beech and yew topiary and a wide range of plants.”

A two-course lunch is included – all for £22.50. Places are being opened up to the public so if anyone would like to go please get in touch with Suzanne Sheldon on the number shown below.

The club also takes part in the Leek Arts Festival with a demonstration at Trinity Church, Derby Street, Leek. This year’s demonstration is on Thursday, May 12 when Janet James, a national demonstrator from Solihull, will be entertaining with ‘I Did It My Way.’ Visitors are welcome – admission is £10.

Chairperson Suzanne Sheldon, said: “We really would like to welcome more members and visitors to our friendly group – we are like an extended family. Junior members are also very welcome and the practise class is brilliant if you wish to learn about the principles of design and techniques and help improve your floral art skills.

“We have hands-on workshops where you can create your own design to take home.”

Suzanne, along with Carol Alcock, who is treasurer at the club, also run Rudyard Flower Club – a friendly hands-on workshop held on the first Tuesday of each month at Rudyard Methodist Church.

They will next meet on Tuesday, May 3 at 7.30pm and the theme is ‘Over the Rainbow,’ the title of the beginners class from the ‘Flower Design’ schedule at Leek and District Show which the two women also organise.

Suzanne said: “There are so many other things that you can get involved with when you are a member of

Leek Floral Art – county shows, RHS shows, flower festivals, Christmas Tree festivals, coffee mornings, outings, community events and events organised by Cheshire Area – the list goes on”.

“Nowadays we are all conscious of doing our little bit to help the environment and with this in mind a hands-on workshop is being organised on Saturday, May 21 at Rudyard Methodist Church. Led by Mark Entwistle from Sandbach we will be creating two designs without using floral foam which is the way forward for NAFAS competitions.

“Mark is renowned worldwide for his fantastic talent in floral art and we always have a fantastic time. If you would like to join us, please contact me for full details.”
