A SUNNY April Bank Holiday Tuesday saw the monthly Pedigree Dairy Sale with a superb entry forward - however it was a commercial heifer that topped the day at £2940 and pedigrees sold up to £2740.

All a strong trade in the sheep section this week! Spring Lambs sold on a fast trade with the best to 462p/kg to average 408p/ kg or £163/head. Hogget’s up again this week to top at 358p/ kg and £174.46/head to average 299.39p/kg. Cull ewes topped at £190 to average £122/head.

Barrens just as dear this week with Limousins to 200p/kg, to top at £1535.50 and clean cattle to 240p/kg.

Pigs a little less this Tuesday but still a good demand with cutters to 139p/kg and £143.64.

Calves sold well topping at £425 for a British Blue bull and heifers to £248.

BARREN COWS (40);

A good entry forward which met a fast trade with the best cows selling to 200p/kg for a 600kg Limousin from J T Needham, Bradnop and a 830kg Limousin selling for 185p/kg for G A Wain, Brandside.

Black & white’s topped at 182p/ kg for a 805kg Friesian from W Carbutt, Siddington and a 785kg Holstein at 180p/kg for G E Brookes & Partners, Loxley who also sold a 800kg Holstein for 176p/kg.

An excellent average of 148.52p/kg & £961.20 per head.

Top headage price of £1535.50 for the 830kg Limousin from G A Wain, with Friesians to £1465.10 and Holsteins to £1436.50.

CLEAN CATTLE;

An 660kg Aberdeen Angus heifer sold for 240p/kg to realise £1584 from Home Farm, Rushton.

Commercial Heifers Reach £2940

Pedigrees Top At £2740 94 Sold

A superb trade for the best on Tuesday saw an outstandin­g commercial heifer from Brian Needham of Rushton Spencer top the day at £2940. Heading to local purchaser Andrew Hulme of Basford, he also went on to take a second from the same home at £2460. The six forward from the Needhams averaged a superb £2238.

Within the pedigree section regular vendors Messrs Sutton of Gawsworth took top honours with a 38kg heifer by Denovo 8068 Tenor at £2740.

The Mellor family of Earl Sterndale saw both their heifers sought after reaching £2300 and £2280 respective­ly.

Entry of 130 New Zealand X Youngstock from Rowe Farms Ltd of Newcastle under Lyme, with Herd Dispersals also booked throughout May (Further Details in Due Course)

PIGS (121);

A few less forward but another decent trade this week. Best cutters selling up to 139p/kg for 84kg pigs from Massie Farms, Stafford who sold others at 135p/ kg twice, 134p/kg x3 and 133p/ kg. A 80kg pig sold for 136p/kg for Bernard Minshull, Buxton.

Bacon pigs sold up to 134p/ kg three times for 89kg and 86kg pigs from J & B Fentem and for a 90kg pig from Bernard Minshull. 86kg pigs made 133p/kg for J & B Fentem and 133p/kg for 86kg pigs from Massie Farms. 126p/ kg for a pair of 93kg pigs from M R Banham.

Heavies sold up to 114p/kg for 117kg pigs from M Leason, Sudbury who also sold 133kg pigs for 108p/kg.

Cull sows topped at 79p/kg for a 296kg sow from R A Watson who also sold a 256kg sow for 68p/kg. 69p/kg for a 243kg sow from Ray Rowlinson.

Desperatel­y short of numbers and trade absolutely electric!!

Best lambs up to 462p and plenty at 430p and better! Overall average of 408p/kg. More needed next week!!

BUTCHERS HOGGETS (554);

A good entry for a bank holiday Tuesday selling on an exceptiona­l trade. Best up to 358p/kg with numerous lots at 330p and better.

Big lambs a stronger trade topping at £174.46/head and heavy lambs averaging £140/ head.

SQQ average a very strong 299.39p/kg.

CULL SHEEP (138);

A modest entry very well bid for topping at £191/head for strong Suffolks and £190 for Texel x ewes.

Overall average £122/head!

CALVES (108);

A god entry for the bank holiday week with customers out for categories and trade on par with recent weeks. Yet again the best very good to sell. Top call of

£425 for a Blue bull from Andrew Hulme with Limousin bulls to £386.

Limousins to £386 and £320 for Andrew Hulme and Fred Yates, Longford. Simmentals topped at £305 for Chris & David Ball with others at £260.

Stabiliser heifers to £138 with Angus heifers to £158 for Graham Turnock.

6 Reared Calves

A smart weaner Blue bull from Irene Mellor at Hatchley Farm topped the section (2 ¾ mths) at £455 with another from the same farm at £440. Dairy Shorthorn Steers (up to 7mths) to £360 with others at 3mths to £220.
