WI ‘push the boat out’ to celebrate nine decades

-

A MOORLANDS Women’s Institute has celebrated its 90th birthday.

Rudyard and District WI was founded in 1932 and is still thriving.

Member Suzanne Sheldon said: “What an amazing night we had celebrating our 90th birthday. We pushed the boat out and had a delicious buffet, provided by AJS Catering, Bridge End and were entertained with the very talented Lola Lamour with a number of songs from the 30s, 40s and 50s.

“Our birthday cake was made by our own WI member, Nancy Matthews, and this went down very well with a glass of Prosecco!

“Founded in 1932 we have been thriving over the years. We have ladies of all ages in our WI and look forward to our general meeting each month on the second Thursday at Rudyard Methodist Church, Lake Road, Rudyard at 7.30pm. The chapel is a lovely venue and caters for disabilities – it really is the hub of the community.

“We have inspirational speakers and demonstrators and have lots of social nights out whether it be with our walking group, trips to the theatre or other exciting events. We take it in turns being hostesses and some wonderful food is on offer each month.

“In May we have our annual meeting where we have pie and peas followed by the election of our President and committee for the forthcoming year. We are always looking to welcome new members both for the committee and the WI in general.”

Some of the themes coming up for the WI members are an afternoon tea to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee; ‘Tropics’ featuring mini hand massages; Dunwood First Responders demonstrating basic first aid; hands-on flower workshop with Casu (Carol Alcock and Suzanne Sheldon); a social evening with history of the WI and local history, a Christmas Party and more.

Suzanne said: “We are much more than a WI. Although we meet on a monthly basis, we are a community who care for one another and help fellow members through sad or trying times and in times of illness and bereavement and this is extended to the whole family”.

“We get involved in fundraising for local charities, take part in the flower festival and Christmas Tree Festival and, more significantly, we raised funds to install a defibrillator at Rudyard Methodist Church, so we are also doing our bit helping in the community.”.
