Swythamley WI bow out with a fabulous finish!..

-

MEMBERS OF Swythamley WI did not want to finish with a whimper but bow out with a fabulous finish as they enjoyed a trip to a Sistine Chapel exhibition in Manchester.

It was the final event before members voted to cease being a WI.

However an organiser promised they would still remain good friends.

Members left the Swythamley Centre by coach and were transported to the Palazzo at the Trafford Centre where they viewed the awesome Sistene Chapel exhibition, which consisted of enormous photographs of all the separate paintings that were made over 500 years ago between 1508 and 1512 by Michaelangelo. These masterpieces when viewed in Rome are at such a height that it is exceedingly difficult to appreciate all the fine detail and skill shown, whereas here people could take their time and really marvel at the frescos with portraits of the prophets and ancestors of Jesus Christ and enjoy their degree of innovation and technical execution.

An organiser said: “Finally we reached the incredible Last Judgement which was painted on the Altar wall between 1536 and 1541 with a huge number of people depicted. The reaction from us all was a huge WOW.

“We continued on to Bramhall Hall having a welcome lunch before going on to tour this superb Tudor manor house with black and white half timbered exterior set in beautifully landscaped gardens. The property is mentioned in the Doomsday Book and has links through marriages with numerous local wealthy families such as the Leighs of Adlington and the Davenports of Capesthorne Hall. The wattle and daub walls have been preserved inside as well as the oak panelling to some rooms.

“There are some beautiful carvings and even medieval wall paintings upstairs in the Solar room. “The

Withdrawing room also has a very ornate and decorative plaster ceiling which has been totally restored to how it was in the 1600s.

“This property is a hidden gem very local to us and well worth a visit. We can all highly recommend it.”

“We had a wonderful, highly educational dayout in the warm sunshine and with friends, too. It is certainly a day we shall all remember. Yes, we have voted to cease to be a W.I. as such but we shall all still remain good friends.”
