Leek market TUESDAY, MAY 31

A VERY good turnout for the dispersal sale of behalf of S M Weston & Sons, Roston, which saw top prices of £3000 and 31 dairies over £2000. A superb trade from start to finish!

More barren cattle forward this week and trade just the same seeing some excellent prices achieved up to 206p/kg or £1563.25.

A stronger trade seen for Spring Lambs this week with prices up to 410p/kg and £174.68 per head with the average of 359.51p/kg overall. Less hoggs about but trade still remaining firm with top price of 302p/kg or £187.44/head. Cull ewes saw an superb trade once again, topping at £190 to average £117 overall.

Pigs sold on a good enquiry seeing the best porkers to 174p/ kg or £171.70 per head with good prices throughout.

A good turnout of buyers for calves this week met a strong trade selling up to £405 for a Simmental bull calf and heifers to £295.

Good to see more cattle about this week and trade just the same! Top price of 206p/kg for a 545kg British Blue from

A E Allcock, Waterhouse­s and a 610kg British Blue at 200p/ kg for B & BM Rowlinson, Bottomhous­e. Another Blue from AE Allcock realised 195p/kg and a 845kg Limousin achieved 185p/kg for K L Potts, Mottram St Andrew.

Overall average of 146.11p/kg or £863.47 per head.

Top headage price of £1563.25 for a 845kg Limousin from KL Potts, with Angus’ to £1344.60 & £1339.80, British Blues to £1267.50 & £1220 and Shorthorns to £1241.

A 735kg Saler bull realised 179p/kg (£1315.65) from MJ & VP Oliver & Sons, Toft Green.

CLEAN CATTLE;

A 675kg Angus sold for 209p/ kg from FG, JM & TE Carnwell, Dilhorne.

Shieldhous­e Dispersal to £3000 with 31 £2000+

A very large crowd gathered for the Dispersal of the Shieldhous­e Herd of Holsteins and A-shieldhous­e Herd of Ayrshires on behalf of the Weston Family of Roston, Ashbourne. They were no doubt drawn by the real quality on offer which saw a top price of £3000 and the entire herd average a superb £1831.

Topping the day was a fresh second calver by De Vlottenbur­g Fantasy. She had given 9711kg in her heifer lactation. Sold giving 45kg she went to the Minshall family of Tean.

Hot in pursuit at £2800 was a February calved third calver by Nafta. Due in again in January to Dynamite she was giving a massive 52kg and went to John Bayley of Nuneaton. Another second calver by Fantasy calved in February reached £2560 to a Stafford purchaser.

Ayrshires topped at £2360 for a milking heifer due again in November to Ryland Red to Messrs Sales of Leek.

In total 29 passed the £2000 barrier to average out an exceptiona­l £1831 which included some with faults.

The commercial section saw a mixed quality forward which sold to a very strong trade topping at £2400 for second calver from Phillip Brocklehur­st of Mobberley with heifers from John Stone of Onecote to £2100.

Overall the strong trade continues to hold if not improve. Please get in touch if you have stock to sell.

PIGS (85);

Another good trade for pigs this week. Pork pigs topped at 174p/ kg for a 65kg pig from David Goldstraw, Meerbrook who also sold a 74kg pig for 167p/kg and 72kg pigs at 164p/kg. 159p/kg for 74kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Cutters topped at 166p/kg for 81.5kg pigs from J & B Fentem who also sold 85kg pigs for 164p/kg, 78kg pigs for 138p/kg and 81kg pigs for 122p/kg. 166p/ kg also for 81kg pigs from David Goldstraw and 164p/kg for 79kg pigs from M R Banham.

Bacon pigs sold up to 166p/kg for a 90kg pig from J & B Fentem and 164p/kg for 87kg pigs from the same home who also dols others at 162p/kg, 152p/kg and 136p/kg. a 94kg pig made 160p/ kg from Bernard Minshull and 160p/kg and 158p/kg for 87kg and 100kg pigs from David Goldstraw.

Heavy pigs topped at 130p/ kg twice for a 111kg pig from M R Banham and 110kg pigs from Bernard Minshull. A pair of 107kg pigs at 114p/kg for Bernard Minshull and 108p/kg for 116kg pigs from the same home.

Two cull sows sold up to

81p/kg for a 193kg sow and a 264kg sow at 66p/kg, both from Bernard Minshull.

SPRING LAMBS (252);

A steady entry saw a very fast rade with plenty of the best lambs seeing 380p/kg and better topping at 410p/kg.

Heavy lambs also well bid for topping at 364p/kg for 47.5kg and a top headage of £174.68. Many more could be sold each week!! Overall average of 360p/ kg.

BUTCHERS HOGGETS (163);

Numbers drying up but a stronger trade throughout, particular­ly for the big hoggs.

Top of 302p/kg but heavies really looking the best sold to 288p/kg or £187.44/head.

Overall average of 253.5p/kg for a tail end entry.

CULL SHEEP (170);

A seasonal entry saw a sharp trade with best Rams to £190 and best ewes to £185.

Overall average of £117.49.

CALVES (155);

A bigger and better entry of

155 head with some good strong calves in the entry and a big line up of buyers led to a super trade throughout.

44 Continenta­l Bulls

Good numbers and some solid calves about with buyers for all. A super black Simmental from the Sutton family, Morton topped the day at £405 (29 days). Top 15 over £300; mediums calves £230 - £290 with a few smaller bulls under £200.

29 Blues av £261 to £370 - DW & P Hulme

8 Sims av £291 to £405 - EB & BM Sutton

6 Lims av £221 to £325 - NG, JMH & H Mellor

The same numbers as bulls and again a good line up of buyers for all qualities. Best Blues sold to £295 twice for Messrs Cooper, Church Lawton and Peter

Gilman, Thorncliff­e (both 7 weeks old). 14 best over £210; mediums £150 - £200 with smaller and younger sorts less.
