More than 1,500 meals handed out by food bank over past month

-

THE demand for the services of Leek and District Foodbank remains very high.

Last month the food bank helped 186 people, which included 113 adults and 73 children.

The total number of meals provided was 1,674.

Of the 80 vouchers, 40 have been issued to clients due to low income, with a further 19 relating to benefit changes and delays.

Project manager Lindsey Stockton said: “Last month we have become our own highest referrers, issuing 14 vouchers, closely followed by Citizens Advice with 12. We have always been able to issue food vouchers, but we were under the impression that it was not generally encouraged that we should do so, instead, directing clients to one of our recognised referral agents.

“This has become difficult to manage over the last few months, and has not rested easily with us, as we, understandably, are increasingly becoming the first port of call for some very desperate people, desperate for food and completely at a loss as to how to get it.

“Not wanting to break the ‘rules,’ we have sought to clarify this point with our area manager at the Trussell Trust, and he has confirmed that it is perfectly in order for us to issue a voucher ourselves at the first point of contact with a client, and then give them any necessary signposting advice in order to get help with their particular issues. As he so rightly said, ‘people are going to find it so much easier to go out and seek help once they have food in their belly.’

“This renewed approach to how we help clients fits perfectly alongside our updated signposting directory and the strengthened links we are building with local organisations now that we are able to meet in person. We are very keen to spread the word that we can be the first port of call for anyone in need, if they are not already in touch with a recognised agency who can issue a voucher. So please share this message wherever you are able.”

The food bank shopping list remains the same, with the pasta and baked bean mountains remaining huge, so please, try to donate alternative items from the list.

The food bank is also giving out household cleaning products, toiletries and dog/ cat food, so any of these are always most welcome.

If you are a donor, the food bank would like to remind people that they can still accept your donations at the food bank on Tuesday and Friday’s between 10am and noon.
