Councillor hits out at Severn Trent over delay to fix spillage in village

-

COMMUNITY leaders have branded sewage pouring into the centre of a village as ‘totally unacceptable.’

Sewage water has been spilling from a manhole cover on Hough Hill and heading down onto Sandy Lane in Brown Edge. Ward councillor Joe Porter went out to inspect the problem after a number of residents raised concerns over the issue.

Mr Porter, who represents Brown Edge and Endon on Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, told families he ‘made it clear to Severn Trent Water that this situation is totally unacceptable.’

Mr Porter told residents on his Facebook page: “Like many residents, I’ve been constantly on the phone to Severn Trent since Sunday, when I can, to keep pressuring them to find out what’s going on with what should be treated as an emergency repair.

“Many apologies to local residents who continue to suffer as a result of this issue. I want to reassure you that

I am treating this as a top priority and keeping in close contact with Severn Trent, as a number of residents saw when I chatted to them on Sandy Lane.

“Thank goodness the sewage water has stopped as having sewage water running down a lane and into people’s driveways is never acceptable.”

Last Wednesday, engineers were on site with the road shut off – while water could be seen flowing down the road into the village.

Severn Trent has said that the team found ‘a lump of concrete’ had caused the blockage.

A spokesperson for the utility giant said: “Following reports of an overflowing sewer on Hough Hill, a team has been out to investigate and has found a lump of concrete to be the cause of the blockage. Our team will remove the concrete from the network and ensure that everything is working as it should.”

The concrete was finally removed on Thursday night.
