A fight is reported to have broken out.

Police received several calls from members of the public regarding the incident, a force spokeswoman said.

It is understood that the men were traced to the Leicester Royal Infirmary within an hour and arrests were made.

Both Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Lord Nelson pub were cordoned off while inquiries were being carried out.

One witness, a woman who arrived at Leicester Royal Infirmary to drop something off for a patient just before 8pm, told the Mercury an armed police officer had instructed her to turn around.

She said a cordon had been put up around the old A&E entrance and that it looked “quite serious”.

It was later revealed that at about 7.45pm firearm officers had located four men at the infirmary who fitted the description of those who had entered the Earl Shilton pub.

Three men were arrested, originally on suspicion of affray, but their arrest details were updated yesyerday.

A 25-year-old and 32-year-old were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a 31-year-old on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

Police at the time said one man had been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Yesterday, his condition was updated and he was confirmed to still be in hospital but with life-changing injuries. The force was reported to still be at the infirmary yesterday. However, cordon at the pub had been lifted.

Police are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
