Police car is rammed after chase of suspect

17-YEAR-OLD IS ARRESTED ON A CATALOGUE OF OFFENCES

A FLEEING burglary suspect was arrested after ramming a police car in Belgrave during a pursuit.

The 17-year-old driver was detained at the conclusion of an authorised pursuit involving officers from Leicesters­hire Roads Policing Unit.

Officers photograph­ed the damage from the head-on collision, showing the crumpled front ends of both vehicles, and later shared the image on social media.

A message posted on Twitter by the police Tactical Dogs and Firearms Unit said the stolen vehicle was spotted following a hit on the Automatic Number Plate Recognitio­n system.

The police said the vehicle made off before preemptive tactics could be attempted and a pursuit followed.

“(This) concluded when the subject vehicle rammed a roads policing unit car. One arrested for burglary.”

A spokeswoma­n confirmed the incident and subsequent arrest.

She said: “We were alerted yesterday to a vehicle in the Birstall area believed to be connected to a car key burglary in Mountsorre­l.

“Officers indicated for the vehicle to stop and as it failed to do, a pursuit was authorised. Following a pursuit, the suspect vehicle came to stop a short time later after colliding with a police vehicle head-on.”

The collision happened in Brandon Street, Belgrave, off Belgrave Road. No injuries were reported.

The spokeswoma­n said: “A 17-yearold youth has been arrested on suspicion of burglary dwelling and theft, failure to stop, dangerous driving, drug-driving and assault on an emergency worker.”
