PUB BOSSES REMOVE ‘SEXIST’ POSTER
PEOPLE ANGRY OVER ‘WHY BEER IS BETTER THAN WOMEN WORDS OF WISDOM’
BOSSES have apologised after a “misogynistic” poster bearing comments described as being “from the Dark Ages” was put up in a pub.
The poster listing 11 reasons “why beer is better than women” was seen in the gents’ toilets at the Wheel Inn, in Oadby.
Most of the “reasons” make sexual references which are unsuitable for publication in the Mercury. Other examples include claims that beer is “better than women” because “it never gets a headache” and “you can enjoy a beer whenever”.
People expressed disgust and disbelief at the sentiments expressed on the poster after a picture of it was posted on the Twitter page of Leicestershire Pubs.
The Twitter page, which has 915 followers, promotes itself by saying: “Tweeting and retweeting everything that’s great about the pubs and breweries of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.”
The photograph of the poster is accompanied by the quote: “Words of wisdom from @wheelinnoadby.”
“Misogynistic claptrap that needs to get in the bin,” said one commenter in response.
“No, not wisdom. Words from the Dark Ages. Unacceptable words these days,” said another.
Other comments included, “How embarrassing. Thankfully not all Leicester pubs are backwards”, “Just why? Pathetic”, “I just cringed so hard my face almost turned inside out”, “Leave this trash in the ‘80s, where it shouldn’t even have been then” and “This sexist [language] shouldn’t have any place in beer”.
But one person found the sign amusing.
“Seen that before. Still makes me chuckle,” they said in their post.
The assistant manager at the Wheel Inn, who did not want to give her name, apologised. “The last thing we wanted to do was cause offence,” she said.
“This poster has been in the gents’ loo since we reopened on August 4 after lockdown.
“It was created by a female customer who was helping us decorate the place.
“She has worked in the pub trade for years and thought it would be funny.”
The pub’s owners, Star Pubs and Bars, also issued an apology.
A spokesman for the company, which is part of Heineken UK, said: “We apologise for an error in judgement which resulted in a wholly inappropriate message being portrayed in one of our pubs.
“This type of sentiment will not be tolerated and the offending poster has now been removed.”
The Leicestershire Pubs Twitter page responded to the criticism by saying: “I see the professionally offended are out in force.
“The ‘words of wisdom’ comment was meant to be ironic. I will have a word with the woman who penned the ditty and let her know how thoroughly naughty she is.”
