A UNIVERSITY student has thanked the community in East Leake for their help after she was involved in a bike crash.

Elin Street, 21, is in her final year studying psychology at Loughborough University.

She says she thought she might die after flying over her handlebars in the accident on Gotham Road near the roundabout at 7pm on Thursday.

She said: “I was out riding with my friend. It was a fluke accident, it could have happened to anyone, my bike slipped on something on the road and I’ve gone flying over my handlebars.

“With the initial shock I was able to get myself onto the pavement, but straight away I knew something wasn’t right.

“I was screaming – I thought I was going to die. It was really bad and I was in a lot of pain.”

Elin had broken her collarbone and suffered bruising to her ribs.

She was kept in hospital overnight.

She says she was overwhelmed by how many people in East Leake helped her.

“A couple stopped, called the ambulance and stayed with us until it arrived,” she said.

“They got me a hoodie to try and make sure I was warm. Another couple came to make sure everything was OK and even got my friend a cup of tea, as she wasn’t allowed to go in the ambulance with me due to coronavirus. “It was really scary being on my own. She was also left worrying about me. It was really heartwarming to have so many people wanting to help.

“My parents are back in South Wales, and I know if I had a daughter I would want people to look after her the way everyone looked after me. I’m just really grateful.”

Elin also stressed the importance of wearing a helmet.

She said: “This is the second time a helmet has saved my life.

“I was in another accident and only suffered a concussion thanks to my helmet. It’s so important to wear one.” Elin has been to visit some of the Good Samaritans who helped her, and delivered presents to thank them.
