Leicester Mercury

PLAYER RATINGS

-

KASPER SCHMEICHEL: He could perhaps have come for the corner that led to Mahrez’s unstoppable drive, but he comfortably held everything else that came his way, and his distribution was fairly accurate too 7/10

TIMOTHY CASTAGNE: Yet another assist for the Belgian, whose excellent start to life at Leicester continued. Linked very well with Praet and showed his athleticism across the ground and in the air 8/10

DANIEL AMARTEY: Repaid Rodgers’ faith to put in a strong, diligent showing in defence. Was in the right place to cut out several crosses, while he pressed his men at the right time. He may not solve City’s need for a centre-back, but he’s certainly an option 8/10

JONNY EVANS: He looked sluggish at first, perhaps unsurprisingly so as this was his first game of any kind since July. But improved and timed his tackles well before his injury 7/10

CAGLAR SOYUNCU: A strong, mature showing from the Turk, who did not put a foot wrong in defence, and carried the ball out from the back with confidence and fine footwork. 8/10

JAMES JUSTIN: Had potentially a tough afternoon in store against Mahrez and Walker, but coped with them admirably, showing strength that had been missing a week earlier. Going forward, he was quick and alert, and kept going throughout 9/10

DENNIS PRAET: Again very tidy on the ball, combining really well with Castagne on the right, but also knowing when to switch play. Rodgers and fans will hope his injury isn’t serious 7/10

YOURI TIELEMANS: Superb. The best midfielder on the pitch and that’s saying something against Man City’s wealth of talent. His passing through the lines was exceptional, while he made up for Ndidi’s absence with a plethora of tackles and interceptions 9/10

PAPY MENDY: His turn started the move for Vardy’s first goal, and that in turn sparked City into life. He cut off passing lines well and battled hard, but perhaps gave the ball away more than usual 7/10

HARVEY BARNES: The weight and timing of his pass for Vardy’s first penalty was exceptional, and his pace and dribbling ability scared the life out of Man City. Tired as the game went on 8/10

JAMIE VARDY: Proving he is still one of the best finishers in the Premier League with a hat-trick. The penalties were placed to perfection, while his instinctive back-heeled finish for the second was sublime. His movement to create space for others was also of high class 9/10

SUBSTITUTES

JAMES MADDISON: Showed the brilliant ability he has to score from range, curling a beauty of a strike into the top corner. He’s getting towards top-level fitness but, for now, he’s an excellent option to have from the bench 8/10

CHRISTIAN FUCHS: Battled away in an energetic cameo 6/10

KELECHI IHEANCHO: Was not on for long but showed a couple of nice touches 6/10
