SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Garry Monk has named Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers as the best manager he’s ever worked with, writes Amie Wilson.

Monk played under Rodgers during his time at Swansea City, gaining promotion to the Premier League under the Northern Irishman’s guidance in 2011.

The former defender was the club captain under the City boss for the 2011/12 Premier League season before the manager swapped the Liberty Stadium for Anfield the following summer.

Monk was given his chance in management just two years later when he took the hot seat at Swansea City.

He has since managed at Leeds United, Middlesbrough, and Birmingham City, and is now in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, as they look to turn around a 12-point deduction given to them at the start of the season.

And Monk revealed Rodgers as one of the managers he looks to for advice and inspiration. “I’ve worked with some brilliant managers over the years, and they’ve all been different,” he told Talking Sport.

“Brendan Rodgers is a great example, the best manager I’ve ever worked with, he’s a top, top manager, but he’s very calm.”

“He remains calm most of the time, I very rarely remember Brendan ever losing his cool or ever really raising his voice.

“I’ve just got a massive admiration for him, obviously I was captain at Swansea when he was manager, our relationship was very strong.

“And then, moving into management, he’s always been very supportive towards me. I’ve had great conversations.”

Despite admiring the way that Rodgers works, Monk is determined to do things in his own way, while also taking advice from the City boss.

“I think like anything in life, you take things that have influenced you through life, not just football but everything, it molds you as a person,” he added.

“The key is not to try and imitate or be anyone else, it’s to be you, your beliefs, your convictions, to follow through with them and then seek advice when you feel like you need to seek advice from more experience, so that’s what I’ve always done.”
