Reflections on where our sporting sides are

-

HAVING had a blank weekend with no City game, and the rugby and cricket seasons over, it’s a good time to assess where the three stand.

City, of course must still be reflecting on their last result.

Having started the new season with three high-scoring wins, they were cut down to size by a very good West Ham side.

City’s next opponents are Aston Villa, fresh from their seven-goal mauling of Liverpool – an interesting prospect!

A trifle hampered with injuries, City will need to treat Villa with great respect.

Tigers, meanwhile, have some time to sort out a plan of action for meeting Gloucester at Welford Road in their first game of the new season on November 21.

I suspect the strength of their forwards will hold the best chance for a win.

I think England matches may mean the key half-back partnership of George Ford and Ben Youngs may not be available and one wonders who exactly is likely to nail these places.

To start with a home win would be a great encouragement.

County have even longer to wait, minus, as they will be, Paul Horton and Mark Cosgrove, but sporting a new acquisition in Scott Steel from Durham.

Coach Paul Nixon should be quite pleased with recent results and was, of course, mighty unlucky not to reach the T20 Finals Day.

Colin Ackermann is a fine captain and all-round cricketer and there are youngsters showing form.

I detect some optimism in the camp.

I still hold on to my expectation of us watching three mid-table sides, but hope it may be better.
