Hot cooking oil sparked blaze that destroyed takeaway
A FIRE which wrecked a takeaway was started by burning hot cooking oil, according to fire investigators.
The Golden Spice, in Narborough Road, Leicester, was destroyed in Tuesday’s blaze, which also saw a flat above the premises badly damaged by smoke.
Emergency services were called to the scene, near Barclay Street, shortly before 4pm after receiving “multiple calls” from concerned members of the public.
Crews from the city’s Southern and Central fire stations attended the incident, with police closing the road between the Hinckley Road and Upperton Road junctions.
A fire service spokeswoman said: “The fire was an accident, started by a fire in an oil range cooker which spread to cupboards in the shop.
“The shop sustained severe damage by fire and there was medium smoke damage to the flat above the takeaway.”
Staff at the takeaway and the occupants of the flat were all accounted for when crews arrived on the scene.
No-one was injured, but the British Red Cross’s emergency response team attended to offer support to those affected by the blaze.
Firefighters put out the fire by 5pm, but the road remained closed while fire investigators examined the scene.
Engineers from Cadent, the Hinckley-based firm responsible for maintaining the area’s gas network, were also requested, along with a road digging team and equipment.
A spokesman said: “We arrived on site shortly after 5pm and isolated the gas supply to the premises as a precaution. The fire was not gas related.”
