City gym’s £400,000 upgrade is revealed

- By STAFF REPORTER leicester.gov.uk/sports

GYM facilities at a popular leisure centre have been transformed after a £440,000 revamp.

Customers returning to the Aylestone leisure centre for the first time since lockdown will discover a newlyextended workout area, featuring a new 70-station gym.

New flooring has been installed throughout, while air handling and lighting have been improved.

A dedicated area for popular spin classes has also been created, featuring new bikes.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby and deputy city mayor Councillor Piara Singh Clair formally opened the refurbished gym this week.

“Helping people to get more active and to improve their fitness levels has never been more important, and I’m sure these new, improved facilities at Aylestone leisure centre will be much appreciated by people in the area,” said the mayor.

“I’m proud the city council is continuing to invest in its leisure centres, helping to give people affordable access to a wide range of sports and leisure activities in their local neighbourhoods.”

While the gym and the pool at Aylestone are now open for business, the leisure centre’s sports hall is being used for coronavirus testing, so no bookings for racquet sports can be made. Group exercise classes are currently taking place in the ancillary hall. New systems are in place at all city council leisure centres to help keep customers and staff safe, with all sessions requiring pre-booking.

Hour-long sessions in the gym must be booked in advance, with each workout restricted to 50 minutes to allow time for changeover. Sessions in the pool must also be booked in advance, with each swim restricted to 45 minutes. Anyone wanting to book a session at a city council leisure centre must be an Active Leicester member. Active Leicester card-holders can use the facilities on a pay-as-you-go basis, or can sign up for a competitively priced membership scheme.
