Police call on shops after eggs thrown
NO SELLING TO CHILDREN PLEA DUE TO CASES OF VANDALISM
POLICE in a town have asked shop owners to refuse to sell eggs to youths following a number of instances of vandalism.
Officers in Melton were called to reports of young people throwing eggs on Monday evening.
They have since visited shops to hand out posters warning against the act, which can cause serious damage to homes and cars.
A spokesman said: “We’ve spoken with store managers and supplied them with a poster, advising against the sale of eggs to youths.
“This is in response to reports of eggs being thrown on Monday evening, as well as trying to put preventative measures in place during the run-up to Hallowe’en.
“We would like to keep egging incidents this October and November to a minimum, as part of a wider plan to reduce anti-social behaviour as per our monthly priorities update we posted earlier this month. If you have children that go out with their friends in the evening, please advise them about throwing eggs and not to participate in this activity.
“Eggs cause criminal damage to people’s properties and vehicles on impact, which can cost hundreds or, in some cases, even thousands of pounds.
“If the egg is not washed off quickly, the acidic liquid of the egg can erode certain materials.
“Please advise your children that these incidents do get reported to the police, they will be investigated and perpetrators will be dealt with accordingly.”
Incidents of egg throwing can be reported to police on 101.
