‘Boy racers’ on new relief road targeted by cops

-

POLICE have cracked down on “boy racers” who have been using an industrial estate and relief road as a racetrack.

The Castle Donington relief road was opened this year in a bid to cut traffic congestion, but it has since attracted drivers racing and behaving in an anti-social manner.

Officers descended on the area following a number of complaints from residents.

They seized one car from its owner on November 1 for having no insurance and, a police spokesman said, they “dealt with” 28 other vehicles a week later.

Police wrote in a Facebook post that they will continue to pay attention to the area.

A spokesman said: “At the beginning of November we received reports from people living in Castle Donington that a number of people in vehicles had been gathering on the relief road and nearby industrial estate.

“Officers carried out a patrol and more than 20 people who had gathered were dealt with for offences under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.

“Teams from the North West Leicestershire Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) have since carried out further patrols over recent weekends.

“During a visit on Sunday, November 1, one car was seized by officers under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act as it was . found there was no insurance in place.

“Officers from the NPA will continue to carry out routine visits to the area.”

At this stage, police said they were unable to provide a detailed breakdown of the action taken against each person.
