PLAYER RATINGS

-

DANNY WARD: Perhaps helped by games for Wales last month, Ward was alert and far from rusty. Produced two firm saves in the first half. 7/10

RICARDO PEREIRA: A thrill to see him back in action, but this was a cautious display by his standard, with the right-back reluctant to get beyond Under. 6/10

WES MORGAN: Looked susceptible to a ball over the top, but had his speedier partners to help him out. Won a few good headers. 6/10

CAGLAR SOYUNCU: Rushed out early on to allow Zorya the space to create a good chance before his evening ended frustratingly early to injury. 5/10

JAMES JUSTIN: Looks far more assured than his early City days, particularly on the ball. His crossing, passing, and dribbling is improving, and his versatility allowed him to again play in two different positions. 7/10

DENNIS PRAET: Showed good off-the-ball movement, an awareness to intercept, and nice link-up play with Under, albeit City looked more of a threat when he was replaced by Maddison. 7/10

WILFRED NDIDI: Got stuck in but the ball didn’t stick, with it ricocheting away as he made tackles in front of the back four. Showed good mobility. 6/10

HAMZA CHOUDHURY: Showed good strength in the first half to outmuscle his opposite numbers, and his passing was decent too, but disappeared in the second half. 5/10

CENGIZ UNDER: A maverick, Under is highly entertaining to watch. His tricks and flicks ranged from sumptuous to hopeless, and his shot choice excellent to ridiculous, but he made things happen. 7/10

KELECHI IHEANACHO: Held the ball up well at times and chased down the defenders with spirit, but was not a threat like he was in the earlier Europa League games. 6/10

HARVEY BARNES: Dribbled with pace and skill and his interplay with Iheanacho was good, but it didn’t happen for him in the right areas. 6/10

SUBSTITUTES

LUKE THOMAS: Delivered some fine crosses and excellent crossfield balls. 6/10

WESLEY FOFANA: Looked confident early on in the way he stepped out of defence, but blew a fine chance with a miscued header, and was then caught flat-footed for the Zorya goal. 5/10

CHRISTIAN FUCHS: Won the headers that he needed to, and timed his interventions well too. 6/10

PAPY MENDY: Without Tielemans beside him, he did not control the midfield like he usually does and was not as effective last night. 6/10

JAMES MADDISON: He was only on the pitch for a few minutes, but created chances and nearly scored himself too. 6/10
