£80 a day to insure? Cormac Rolls with it...

20-YEAR-OLD BUYS VINTAGE VEHICLE

A YOUNG petrolhead from Leicestershire has chosen a rather unusual form of transport for someone his age - a vintage Rolls-Royce car, which costs him £80 a day to insure.

Cormac Boylan, 20, from Great Dalby, near Melton, works as a motoring journalist and radio DJ - and is a self-confessed motoring enthusiast.

After saving up enough money from jobs, as well as his side business selling vintage cars on behalf of clients, he decided to buy the 1989 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit for an undisclosed amount.

“In my job, I have driven all sorts of different cars - from Ferraris, to Lamborghinis - if you can name it, I’ve probably driven it,” he said.

“Two great friends of mine owned a Rolls-Royce, so I thought I was going to buy one too.

“They are the most luxurious carmaker in the world and I thought - how many people can say they owned a Rolls-Royce at 20?”

Although Cormac did not want to disclose how much he paid for the car, he did reveal it is costing him hundreds of pounds just to run it.

He insures his Rolls on a daily rate - an eye-watering cost of £80 a day - and after he bought it, he also had to buy two new drive belts, at £200 each, as well as four new tyres, £1,000 for all four.

He also has road tax to contend with, which set him back another £250 for six months.

The car, which he bought from a seller in Mansfield, is also a bit of a gas guzzler as it only does 12 miles to the gallon - and with a tank that costs £110 to fill up, that isn’t cheap either.

“When I bought the car, they filled the tank up halfway to get me home,” he said. “By the time I got back to Melton, I was already running on fumes.”

Cormac acknowledges a Rolls isn’t the most common car for a 20-year-old to be driving and lots of people don’t believe he bought it by himself, or that it’s even his. “I carry all the paperwork around with me in the glove box just to prove it’s mine and I bought it,” he added.

Cormac, who also owns a Vauxhall Corsa for most of his day-to-day travel, said the response from people who see him in the car has been mixed.

“I picked a friend up from college the other day, and some of the students were giving me rude hand gestures, but I think it’s just jealousy,” he added.

“But when I took it to the McDonald’s drive-through, people were taking pictures of it and I was bombarded with questions.

“I drive cars like this all the time for work, so you get used to that kind of response from people.”

After his first Rolls-Royce, Cormac is considering buying another, or swapping it for a vintage Bentley later this year.

He also reviews the cars he test drives or buys on his YouTube channel - Cormac on Cars.
