‘I can still perform at highest level’

CITY SKIPPER MORGAN WILL CONSIDER HIS OPTIONS AT END OF THE SEASON

LEICESTER City skipper Wes Morgan says he remains undecided over his future, with options aplenty for the centre-back.

Morgan, who turns 37 in the new year, is out of contract with City next summer and there have been suggestions he will hang up his boots to take on an administrative role at the club, as well as a non-executive director role at the Professional Footballers’ Association.

However, the title-winning captain said those conversations will wait until the end of the season, with Morgan hinting at a potential continuation of his playing career if he feels in good enough shape.

“Nothing’s decided yet,” he said. “I’m focused on this season, getting to the end and then seeing how I feel, and seeing what I want to do.

“In terms of what you might have heard, nothing’s been decided yet. I’m still enjoying playing and I know I’m still capable of performing at the highest level.

“I just want to see how far I can get this season, then I’ll make any decisions at the end.”

While Morgan’s influence on the pitch has decreased over recent seasons, his influence in the dressing room hasn’t, with Brendan Rodgers praising his mentoring ti andd leadership leads hi quali-li ties.

Morgan said it’s a role he is happy to take on.

“I like to think my role is still very important even though I don’t play as much these days,” he said, having appeared in eight of City’s 17 games in all competitions this season.

“I’m always speaking to the gaffer and the coaches and I still feel very much part of the team.

“I’ve been here a long time and it’s good to see the young talent coming through and performing on the pitch, it gives me great joy.

“Whichever way I can support that, whether that’s coming on in the final few moments of a game, or playing the odd game to give some of the other players a rest, or if there’s an injury, I know I’m still part of the team. I enjoy my role.”

One of those young talents is the other Wes in City’s back-line, Wesley Fofana.

The French teenager has had a storming start to his Premier League career, and it’s not gone unnoticed by his captain.

“I think he’s done fantastic,” said Morgan. “He’s not had much time to settle in. He’s gone straight into the starting line-up. He’s not put a foot wrong.

“He’s not had much time to train and work on things, but he’s took to the Premier League like a duck to water.

“It’s a pleasure to witness such a young talent blossoming. You can see from his performances how good he can be. It’s his first season and he’s playing at such a high standard already. The only way is up for him, so I predict a very bright future for him.”
