DELAYS WITH ROAD CLOSURE

A PEDESTRIAN was seriously injured after a collision with a lorry on the A511 yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene, on the Ashby bypass to the north of the town, near the Derbyshire border, shortly before 6am.

The dual carriageway was closed in both directions while police and ambulance crews dealt with the incident.

The closure was in place between the roundabout for Boundary and the turn for Smisby.

Officers from both Leicestershire Police and Derbyshire Constabulary attended the incident. However, crash investigators from the neighbouring force are leading the investigation.

A spokesman for the Derbyshire force said yesterday: “The A511 Ashby Road is closed in both directions between the Smisby Road island and the roundabout at Boundary following a serious collision between a lorry and a pedestrian.

“The incident occurred just before 6am and the road is likely to remain closed for some time.”

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 5.33am on December 9 to the A511 Ashby Road. The caller reported there had been a road traffic collision.

“We sent a doctor in a car, a paramedic in a fast response car and a double-crewed ambulance.”

Crash investigators could be seen examining the cab of a white lorry inside the police cordon.

It is not known which hospital the casualty has been taken to, nor their condition or the extent of their injuries.

The road closure – on the main route between Leicester and Burton – caused widespread delays and congestion, with police advising motorists to avoid the area.
