A GRANDMOTHER is heartbroken after thieves stole two special Christmas lights which were bolted down outside her front door.

Emma Ellis is distraught after the two dog-shaped lights were taken before her four grandchildren had a chance to see them.

Emma, 55, of Melton, said: “We got the lights to represent our two dogs that our grandchildren love. One was about a metre high and the other about 30cm.

“Due to the coronavirus restrictions we can’t see the grandchildren properly and they can’t see us or the dogs.

“So we searched and searched and found these lights so the kiddies could see the dogs on our front porch.

“I can’t believe anyone could do such a horrible thing. The lights were bolted down so they ripped them up and cut the wires to the lights.

“It is an unbelievably cruel thing to do.”

Emma said she and husband Robin put the £40 lights in place on Sunday, November 29. By December 2, they had gone.

“I went to take our dogs out at 5.30am and the dog lights had gone,” said Emma.

“It is so cruel because the local youngsters loved them and our grandchildren had not even got to see them.

“It’s awful. We have tried but can’t get any more as they seem to be sold out everywhere.

“We were trying to cheer people up and spread a little happiness in difficult times and look what happened.

“We reported it to the police because we heard someone down the road had their lights vandalised.”

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said they had been notified of the theft. “We had a report of two dogshaped Christmas lights being stolen form the front porch of a house in Melton between 11.30pm on December 1 and 5.30am the next day.”
