‘Beware damage done by unattended candles’
FIRE SERVICE WARNING AFTER FIRE STARTED BY DIVA LIGHT IN HOME
SHOCKING pictures show the extent of the damage caused by a fire after a Diva candle was left unattended.
The scenes have been shared by the fire service and the victim of the fire in a bid to warn others of the dangers of unattended candles.
Crews from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Belleville Drive, in Oadby, on Sunday morning following reports of a fire in the bedroom of a house. Arriving just before 11am, firefighters found a blaze had broken out in a first floor bedroom, caused by a Diva candle, a type of candle traditionally used for Diwali.
The occupant of the house suffered burns to his hands trying to put the fire out.
A fire service spokeswoman said: “We received an initial call at 10.57am from the occupant reporting a fire in the bedroom of a domestic property.
“It was a two-storey domestic property. The fire was located in the bedroom on the first floor.
“Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property.
“All occupants were out of the property when we arrived. The fire was out on arrival.
“One person received first aid from the ambulance service for burns to his hands, then was taken to hospital for further treatment.”
The blaze caused extensive damage to the bedroom and smoke damage to the whole of the first floor of the house, which can be seen in the pictures posted by the fire service’s Wigston Station.
A post on the station’s Facebook page read: “The occupant was injured attempting to put the fire out, but has given us authorisation to post this to help others.
“Never leave candles unattended, never go back in for personal belongings.
“Get out, stay out, call the fire service.”
Crews from Eastern station also attended the incident.
