NHS campaigners are an inspiration to us all

-

AS a city councillor, an inspiring group I see that continues to fight for a better society for the many is Save Our NHS Leicestershire.

My experience of their community campaigning in recent years has only been positive.

Even with the strain of the pandemic they have been producing informative leaflets and articles, organising online public meetings and contributing positively to the consultation on the future of our hospitals.

We need more campaigners like these.

They help to hold decision-makers like myself accountable and are doing a massive service to workingclass communities in Leicester, helping make sure we can contribute to an informed decision about the Tories’ proposed investment in our hospitals. I would urge others to get involved with their work.

It is only by organising and campaigning together that the working class can make our world a better place.

Coming from a poor background myself, I understand the vital importance of having public services which act as a safety net for everyone but especially for those living in poverty and struggling every day.

Not only are the worst-off families in our city facing starvation because of the government’s action, they are having their futures stolen and we have to stand up and speak up for those who most need us.

For years the government has stated that we need less hospitals as they say they will provide us with care in the community.

They then close our hospitals and refuse to fund care in the community, and it is the working people who pay the price. What price can be put on good healthcare?

Maybe if those scroungers and tax dodgers in the corporations and billionaire class were made to pay the tax they owe society, we could make sure we have a society that looks after the many and not just the few. Coun Gary O’Donnell,

Western Ward
