‘Stick to rules at Christmas’

FROM POLICE CHIEF

- By NICK DAWSON nicholas.dawson@reachplc.com

THE policing commander for Hinckley and Blaby has urged residents to stick to the coronavirus regulations over the festive period.

From December 23 to 27, up to three households can temporarily mix in Christmas bubbles. However, people cannot go to a pub or restaurant with their bubble.

Inspector Jamie Osborne, neighbourhood policing commander for Hinckley and Blaby, said his officers “will engage with the community and enforce where we feel it is necessary”.

He said: “I would encourage readers to view the government website and adhere to the legislation.

“We have always adopted the four Es principle, which is to Engage, Explain, Encourage and finally Enforce where necessary. However, for the most blatant breaches I have always encouraged my officers and staff to enforce.

“While I accept the cost of the fixed-penalty notice is quite high, we have had the legislation in place for several months and it is in place to protect lives.”

Individuals found breaching the Covid-19 rules can be issued a £200 fine for the first offence, which doubles with each further offence up to a maximum of £6,400.

Police can also give out fines of £10,000 for illegal gatherings of more than 30 people.

Insp Osborne said: “I have now been in post for four months and I have to say I am delighted with how things are going so far.

“Crime across our area continues to fall. We work really well in partnership with Hinckley and Blaby councils to tackle anti-social behaviour and I will always encourage residents to report such cases, so that we can deal with them effectively.

“I have a great team working at both Hinckley and Blaby and it is a real pleasure to turn up every day and work alongside them.”
