Keep rambling on

-

WE might all be tempted to cosy-up inside as the weather gets colder, but winter is actually one of the best times to get the family outdoors. The Ramblers have launched their Walk in Winter campaign and say: “The days are getting shorter, and winter walking can be a great way to blow away the cobwebs, enjoy some magical seasonal surroundings or take a break from preparations for the coming festive season.

“We want to encourage and support everyone to find their feet and enjoy the mood-boosting, uplifting joys of getting out walking in winter.”

If you’re stuck for ideas of where to walk you can check out Ramblers Routes, an easy-tosearch collection of more 3,000 walks across Britain. All the walks are available online or via The Ramblers’ app, and those less than three miles are free to access.

WHY GET KIDS INTO WALKING?

FOR babies, just being outside is a wonderful sensory experience, and for toddlers it’s a great way to burn off energy and encounter first-hand, the animals and landscapes they see in books or on TV.

For older children, the prospect of walking may not seem cool, but by getting out together regularly, you can create a lasting love for wildlife and the natural environment, as well as spending precious time as a family.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

WALKING can improve mood and sleep quality, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. Being in nature and green spaces is also shown to have a positive impact on mental health.
