Passenger dies in hospital after car crashes into ditch

A MAN has died after the car he was travelling in crashed into a ditch and overturned on a rural road in Leicesters­hire.

The deceased was one of four passengers in a Ford Fiesta being driven along Willoughby Road, just outside the village of Willoughby Waterleys, in Harborough district, on Sunday.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene shortly after 3.15pm and five casualties found inside the car were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Leicesters­hire Police have confirmed that the front seat passenger has since died from their injuries.

No details of their identity have been released.

A spokesman for the force said:

“Officers are investigat­ing after the passenger of a car, who was involved in a serious collision in Willoughby Waterleys (Sunday) afternoon, died.

“The collision was reported at 3.15pm and involved one vehicle, a silver Ford Fiesta, which was travelling along Willoughby Road when it left the road and came to rest overturned in a ditch.”

They added: “There were four men in the vehicle, three were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary with minor injuries and the front seat passenger sustained serious injuries.

“He was taken to University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshi­re where he sadly passed away during the night.”

The crash happened at the junction of Cosby Lane and

Willoughby Rood, near Willoughby Waterleys. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle being driven beforehand.

The collision involved the single vehicle and happened close to the junction with Cosby Lane, which is not far from the M1 and just a few miles south of Cosby and Countestho­rpe, according to Leicesters­hire Fire and Rescue Service.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash, or saw the Ford Focus shortly beforehand, to get in touch.

The spokesman said: “If anyone has dashcam in their vehicles and were in the area at the time we would ask that they contact officers if they have anything which will assist.” Call 101.
