Policing boss visits estates to see work to prevent

VIGILANCE and awareness of your home’s security are key factors in making sure you avoid becoming a victim of crime this Christmas.

That was the advice of Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner during a recent visit to the Western Park and Westcotes areas of Leicester in the run up to the big day.

Lord (Willy) Bach was looking in on residents to see first-hand work being carried out to improve home security. It follows the securing of an extra

£1.5 million of additional cash for crime prevention in the community earlier this year, through a successful funding bid to the Government’s Safer Streets Fund.

“Sadly, the season of goodwill means little to the thief,” said Lord Bach. “At this time of year, extra vigilance is needed to keep us safe from acquisitive crime.

The cash is being used to prevent and reduce burglary, theft, and robbery in three key areas of the city and county.

They include the Warwick Way and Dishley estates, in Loughborough, and streets in the Braunstone Frith and Narborough Road areas of the city.

During a visit to Browning Street, in Westcotes, Lord Bach said: “It’s more important than ever to ensure doors and windows are securely locked and fastened and that all practical steps are taken to deter thieves at this time of year.

“Our Safer Streets Initiative is designed to help residents protect their properties and prevent crime. I’m pleased we’ve been able to deliver this service ahead Christmas.”

People living in the area are taking advantage of comprehensive security checks followed, where appropriate, by free installation of protective measures that include upgraded door lock and window closures, letterbox protection and security lighting, as well as smart timers.

The work is being carried out by the Birmingham-based firm, 24-7 Locks Ltd, which has been commissioned by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to provide a range of security and target hardening services.

In addition to free home security improvements for residents in the qualifying areas, funding is also being
